About

The Custom House was designed by architect Robert Reid and completed in 1812. Its purpose was to monitor Leith harbour and to ensure the payment of both Customs and Excise taxes across Scotland. It remained in use until 1980, when it was bought by the National Museum of Scotland and became a collections store. SHBT were granted a lease on Custom House in 2015 and are currently working to restore the building and adapt it for public use.

The Custom House currently has a dedicated events space available to hire for any occasion, as well as a variety of flexible office / studio spaces available to let. For members of the public who are particularly interested in the building, we operate a series of open days throughout the year.
