Our Projects
Introduction
SHBT is the largest Buildings Preservation Trust in Scotland and one of the most active in the UK. We have delivered over £40 million of capital investment into Scotland’s built heritage and our award-winning projects have secured the future of over 25 significant Scottish buildings as well as supporting others. We believe passionately in what we do and strive to deliver projects that are both beneficial to the local community and enable long-term, sustainable use.
CURRENT PROJECTS

Custom House
We occupy and manage this important building in the heart of Leith whilst we develop a plan for its restoration and long-term use.

Jedburgh and Hawick Conservation Area Regeneration Schemes
We manage these two Conservation Area Regeneration Schemes on behalf of Scottish Borders Council.

The Port House
We are providing project management services to support the restoration of this architecturally significant building.

The Tron
We are in the initial stages of developing a long-term vision to restore and protect this iconic 17th-century building.

The Haining
We are working with The Haining Charitable Trust to provide vital support in the ongoing development of this historic mansion and estate.

OUR SKILLS
Our principal focus is to develop, manage and deliver fully-funded building regeneration projects. We have over 40 years’ experience in taking on and successfully delivering complex projects involving neglected and ruinous historic buildings. Our long-standing expertise makes us ideally placed to develop our own projects and provide consultancy services for other organisations. We offer advice and practical support for organisations both large and small at every step of the building restoration process, giving every project the best possible chance of success.
The difference SHBT can make to a project starts before any restoration work. Early project development motivates communities and stakeholders to recognise the heritage in their local area and actively engage with the process of returning it to use. We are experienced at compiling both Conservation Plans and Feasibility Studies and are successful in securing funding from major organisations as well as a wide variety of charitable trusts, foundations and philanthropic donors.
Having previously delivered projects across Scotland, we find the best design teams and contractors to manage the design process and deliver the on-site work. We ensure all our projects have a long-term impact by developing a sustainable business plan and engaging the public with the restoration process in order to nurture interest in Scotland’s built heritage.
In addition to our project expertise, we also have considerable experience managing large, grant-funded programmes such as Townscape Heritage Initiatives (THIs) and Conservation Area Regeneration Schemes (CARS). We are adept at forging close relationships with local councils and members of the community to deliver these schemes and ensure that they have the greatest possible impact.
